Series WEIMAR BERLIN: BITTERSWEET METROPOLIS

WEIMAR BERLIN:

BITTERSWEET METROPOLIS

Germany's Weimar Republic (1919-1933) lasted less than 15 years. Created in 1919 in the wake of Imperial Germany’s collapse at the end of World War I, and destroyed in 1933 by the rise of Hitler and his Nazi Party, this hopeful but fragile country became a political, economic and social disaster. But culturally and intellectually, it was an explosion of invention and creativity.

In this colourful series at London’s Southbank Centre, the Philharmonia and Esa-Pekka Salonen explore the familiar, the unexpected and the downright peculiar, and trace the connections that linked so many artists and thinkers of the period so intimately to one another.
