Carl Davis on Phantom of the Opera
Composer and conductor Carl Davis gives insight into the process of writing his soundtrack for Rupert Julian's 1925 silent film, The Phantom of the Opera. The podcast features short clips from the film and a preview of Carl Davis' vivid score. The Philharmonia Orchestra presented a screening of the film with live orchestral accompaniment at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.
More than 80 years after its première, Lon Chaney's extraordinary performance as the Phantom still has the power to shock; and the film is notable for its sumptuous set-piece scenes, including a masked Ball in which the Phantom appears as the Red Death on the Grand Stairway.
