THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA IN BEDFORD TRUST
Please consider supporting the Philharmonia in Bedford Trust and secure the future of the Orchestra’s residency at the Bedford Corn Exchange in perpetuity
The Philharmonia Orchestra is very proud to be Orchestra in Residence at Bedford Corn Exchange. Since 1995, the Orchestra’s concert season has sat firmly at the heart of Bedford’s cultural life and each year more than 4,400 audience members hear the Philharmonia perform at their local concert hall.
The Philharmonia has been joined on the platform by the world’s leading conductors and soloists, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Christoph von Dohnányi, Mitsuko Uchida, Joshua Bell and Vladimir Ashkenazy, to name but a few. The Orchestra has also taken its music out of the concert hall into local schools and communities throughout Bedford to offer people of all ages the opportunity to experience orchestral music, often for the first time. Our education programme, including projects such as the award-winning Hear and Now, have reached over 6,000 children in the local area.
For the first 21 years of the residency, the Philharmonia has relied upon a mixed economy of income to support its programme predominantly from Arts Council England, Bedford Borough Council, Box office income and private support. Acknowledging increasing pressures on local authority budgets and the public purse, the Philharmonia in partnership with Arts Council England, Bedford Borough Council and The Harpur Trust has established the Philharmonia Orchestra in Bedford Trust.
The Trust is aiming to build a £1 million endowment by 2019. The income generated shall annually be applied to support a concert season of at least six concerts, to ensure the Philharmonia’s future in Bedford is secure. Thanks to our generous founding partners, £898,120 has already been raised, and we are now aiming to raise a further £101,880. We need your help. There are many ways that you can play your part. We do hope that you will do what you can to ensure that the Philharmonia can remain at the heart of Bedford’s cultural life.
