After 4 highly successful years as the Philharmonia’s Director of Education, Alexandra Brierley is leaving the Orchestra to take up the post of Director of Creative Learning at Southbank Centre. Her departure coincides with a major rebrand under which the Education Department will become the Learning and Engagement Department, thus reinforcing its central role within the organisation.
The Director of Learning and Engagement will develop and sustain the Philharmonia Orchestra’s strategy for Learning and Engagement, ensuring that the company remains at the forefront of innovation and creativity in its work with young people, community groups, emerging artists and audiences. We are seeking a strategic thinker who strives for innovation and sustainability, and who is passionate about impacting on the lives of people and communities through music in creative, meaningful ways. Working with the Chief Executive and Senior Management colleagues, the postholder will ensure that Learning and Engagement activity is integrated into the Orchestra’s artistic programming, maximising opportunities for collaboration across the organisation and strengthening key areas such as UK residencies and digital project work.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience of working with young people and/or schools, community groups, colleges and universities in an arts environment, and will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the UK education landscape and trends, experience of fundraising (in particular, a track record of securing successful grant applications) and an understanding of the barriers to arts engagement, particularly for young people and vulnerable members of the community.”
